Feds ready to ramp up stimulus projects - Memphis Business Journal:

Vice President Joseph Biden in a conference call with reporterx Monday claimed the stimulus helpedcreater 150,000 jobs in the first 100 days after the Americaj Recovery and Reinvestment Act was passee in February. However, from 8.9 percentg in April to 9.4 percent in May, accordin g to the U.S. Department of Labor. Biden said stimulues contracts and funding could resultin 600,000 jobs beingf created this summer. ARRA also will fund 135,000 state and locall education jobsand 125,000 summer youthg jobs.
To that end, Biden said the governmenft is fast trackingstimulus projects, Construction and energy conservation contracts at 107 national Improvements at 90 veterans medical Construction funding for 200 water and wastewater treatmentg plants in rural areas. Construction at 98 airports nationwidrand 1,500 highways and at just undert 400 military bases. The priority projectsa have not yet been broken down by statewor locality. The move comes as some city governments say it is takingy months for ARRA moneyh to hit the local level so contract biddin gcan begin.
Other critica have complained that construction and government contractors alreadgy working in the publid sector are getting most ofthe benefits.
