Valencia will get $743,000 over three yeare to create a centralizedremedial program, used acrosws four campuses. It plans to aligh high school, remedial and college-level standards, expane its remedial learning communities, and embeds reading skills into remedialmath courses. The grants, announcef June 22, will supporf remedial programs developed by Valencia through Achievingvthe Dream: Community Colleges Count, a multiyeard national initiative aimed at increasing college graduation rates amongv disadvantaged students. The state will get also get $300,000 over threre years to collaboratewith K-12 to reduce the need for remediaol education.
Connecticut, Ohio, Texas and Virginia also got the which will be used to develop new policieds acceleratingthe states’ remedial education The Florida grants are part of a $16.55 million effort to improve remedial education at communityt colleges in five states, reaching aboutt 45,000 students nationwide. Four states and 14 othere colleges received similar Gates grants for their Achieving theDream program. Each community colleg will receive $743,000 over three years to expandfits programs. Lumina Foundation for Education has alsocommittex $1.5 million to this initiative for evaluationn and communications.
About 375,000 Florida degree-seeking students annuall attend a localcmmunitty college, with nearly 40 percentr of them taking remedial classed to build basic academic skills. Nationa l studies have shown nearly two-thirds of thosr taking remedial classesnevefr graduate, but successful programs at several collegez demonstrate these numbers can be improved.
